The episode follows Penelope, a mother and nurse, who decides at an earlier point in the series to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner. She has to juggle taking care of her kids and mother as well as deal with her own stresses as a student.
Elena struggles with the fact that her dad does not accept her as a lesbian and projects that anger by attempting to pick a fight with her Catholic School over building a Gay-Straight Alliance. A plan which backfires when the school is surprisingly accepting and claims it will foster growth in the community.
- I relate to this episode especially at a point where the whole family finds out that she is failing and Elena insists that Penelope “just needs to study more” but Penelope struggles with the idea of whether she can keep studying or if she needs to give up. The family then works together to build a study environment for their mother. Sometimes it’s not about the direct amount of time or effort spent studying but about building an environment that makes studying effective and not being afraid to ask your loved ones for help if needed.
