#186: What is gatekeeping and why is the GT Community worried about it? The team talks about ways that gatekeeping happens in Geek culture and we look at media examples of people taking it upon themselves to decide who does or does not have access or rights to a community or identity.

Just listened to this episode.

I too feel torn with “gatekeeping”.

In geek culture I find it annoying as we try to measure how nerdy someone is, Ready Player One, to me is an example of this.

The other side is I am a practicum supervisor for graduate level counselling students. I appreciate all I learn from practicum students, but I am also a gatekeeper to the counselling profession in my role as a practicum supervisor. It’s a role I take very seriously, and I believe is very important to maintaining integrity in the counselling profession. In this sense, I am in favor of gatekeeping.

Thanks for this thought provoking episode as I try to process and understand gatekeeping.
